| TRURO FENCING CLUB |
 |
Truro Fencing Club was founded in 1970 by 3 enthusiasts, Andrew McDonald, Colin Ellis and Gwynedd Haslock. It thrived as a strong county club through the 70s and 80s, and was involved in local, regional and occasionally national competitions. In the late 80s Richard Bonehill moved down to Cornwall and began to fence and coach at the club, and in 1989 he began to coach a new youngster at the club, Jon Salfield. Jon was to become the first home-grown Cornwall fencer to achieve international honours, and in turn would coach many youngsters who now figure highly in the national fencing scene. Truro club dwindled in membership through the early 90s, and reached a low point of 7 members, before Jon and Richard put in place a 5-year development plan to increase participation, restructure the club's coaching, gain funding and achieve better results. The plan's targets were met in 18 months: the club moved to a bigger venue to accommodate the huge increase in membership, Rob Bruniges was forced out of retirement to help coach, the Awards For All scheme made two grants totalling £8000 to the club and Truro was on the way to becoming a successful player on the national fencing stage. In September 2007, Jon Salfield took over as Head Coach, and started the Fence Cornwall project, funded to the tune of over £20,000 by England Fencing, Awards for All and Sports Partnerships. The project has taken free fencing sessions to over 4000 Cornish children and established more than 20 school fencing clubs. Four full-time coaches now work in the Fence Cornwall project and at Truro Fencing Club, supported by 2 other part-time coaches.
With a membership of over 80, and a production line of top-quality fencers at junior, senior and veteran level, Truro now plays a bigger part and has a higher national and international profile than any club in Cornwall's history in British Fencing. Taking part in the Excalibur tournament after a long break was a key move for the county 9 years ago. At the first event Cornwall came 12th and last, but has improved dramatically each year, and in 2008 produced a best-ever 2nd place overall, with the Men's and Women’s Sabre team both taking Gold in their category. Truro now has a long list of Commonwealth medallists, international Junior and Cadet successes, senior GB World Cup fencers and medals at the highest level on the Veteran circuit. Characterised by its fierce competitiveness, much-envied team spirit, and constant quest for betterment, Truro has brought about its meteoric rise purely by, in the words of Keith Smith, 'Local endeavour and passion for the sport'.
Truro meets twice a week (Tuesday and Thursday) at Truro School's New Gymnasium, and welcomes visitors and new members of any level. Truro also organises the Cornwall Leon Paul Junior Series Foil Tournament and the famous 'Duel on the Beach'. Visit www.trurofencing.co.uk or contact Jon on 07779 130942 for more info.
